ImageLast month, when we visited the pediatrician, we were confident that Tom had reached a new high. We believed that he would be in the 90th percentile range for both weight and height, because when we measured him at home, he was over 15 pounds. However, the moment I put Tom on the scale at the pediatrician's office, both Jessie and I were totally shocked and saddened by the number shown on the digital display. It was less than 13 pounds. Even after we asked the nurse to weight Thomas again, he was only slightly heavier than 13 pounds with clothes on. I later figured that either our weighing Thomas at home was biased to the higher end, or the doctor's scale was malfunctioning.

ImageThe most depressed person was actually Tom's grandma. On the one hand, she was worried that Thomas was not growing well, and on the other, she might have felt sorry that she had not done a good enough job.

Tom earned a name for having a good apitite when he was born. He could easily finish 120ml (4 oz) when he was only a few days old. Now, 120ml is still the norm, and even worse he never volunteers to eat and almost never eats when he is awake. This makes our, especially grandma's  job very difficult. Imagine when he is hungry and sleepy, he could not fall in sleep because he is hungry and he does not eat because he is not asleep. In that situation, he can keep crying for quite some while.

However, Tom's grandma developed lots of skills and accumulated great experience in handling such situations. Gradually, Tom picked up his old rhythm of eating... and, look at the new result!

The day of the traditional Chinese New Year, we went to see the pediatrician again, and you know what. He'd gained 4 pounds during the last 5 weeks, and kept his normal pace of getting taller. And the result: 17 pounds and 3.5 ounces in weight, and 68 cm in length, both of which are in the 90% range, bingo!
