Okay, 12 months, 13 months, 14 months, now he is almost 15 months, and still there is no sign he is capable of saying anything other than mama and papa. At the same age, his buddy Kyle was able to say lots of words and even to imitate animals' sounds. One day, mom and grandma were talking. They were saying they could not find the lid for a spring water bottle, wondering who misplaced it. Then they saw Thomas kneeling down and then crouching over the floor, staring below the coffee table. Mom was curious about what he was looking for so went forward to check. The lid was right there under the table. Did Tom really understand mom and grandma's conversation? Dad did not see it. Dad did not believe it. A few days later, dad was cleaning Tom's nose with "little nose". Tom grabbed the lid and a second later, dad could not find it anymore. Upset, dad went ahead to cut Tom's finger nails then proceeded to look for the lid and had to give up after everyone in the house tried. "Bad boy, where is the lid?" I said. Then we saw Tom kneeling down and crouching over the floor, staring under the dresser. No surprise, the lib was there. Thomas can not talk now, but at least he listens and understand. And for me, that is good enough.

As new parents, Jessie and I (and certainly all grandparents) keep checking Thomas against all important milestones for babies. Tom is pretty normal on basically every measurement, but there is one thing that we, or maybe just myself, knew from the beginning that Tom would not be quite "normal" - he would not start to talk as other kids typically do. Why? It is because his dad did not.
